Intrepid Optimist

Intrepid Optimist is the place where I can share my stories; fact, fiction and thoughts from the past and present. It’s Written by myself for people who believe adventure knows no age

Turning Down Offers

In life, you sometimes miss out on golden opportunities, but I do not believe you should spend time looking back and regretting. When I think of missed chances, I prefer to laugh at them, and in some cases to thank the powers that be for saving me from their subsequent fates.

In the seventies, I was offered a lucrative position as manager of a North American coal-mining company, in Haiti. This was after the notorious Papa Doc Jnr became President. I could have become very wealthy but decided not to take the job. The following year the corrupt dictator threw all the company employees in jail, where they remained, in atrocious conditions for a long time.

Another time, in another place, I turned down the offer of a flight in a small aircraft, which would have saved me a many hours journey from Largo Agrio, in the Ecuadorian Oriente, to the capital, Quito, to learn much later the plane had disappeared, and to my knowledge has still to be found.I have still to see the Pyramids at Giza or visit the birthplace of Jesus Christ. In 1954 while serving in the British army in Ismalia, I had the opportunity, but turned down the offer, preferring at the tender age of eighteen the fleshpots of Port Said, to antiquities of Cairo or the Holy City. My logical for declining the offer was simple. The Biblical and cultural sites would be around for a long time to come, whereas the Fatimas who dwelt in the off-bounds area of Port Said, certainly would not.
