Honesty, the Best Policy

Written for Friday Fast Fiction. 100, word photo prompt. Photo by Bjorn Rudbeg.

“Are these hats alpaca?”

“You kidding? Pure sheep.”

“In that case, very expensive.”

“Who knows the difference. Did you?”

“No… but someone might.”

“If they’ve never been to Peru, they won’t.”

“But it’s still dishonest.”

“It’s not a lie, just stretching of truth a little.”

“You’ll not get away with it.”

“Alright, let’s say they’re llama and not alpaca.”

“Is llama cheaper then?”

“Certainly less… but we’ll make less profit.”

“Why not tell the truth and have no come-back.”

“I never thought of that.”

“Then be honest. Stop trying pulling the wool over peoples’ eyes.”

“Which wool, sheep, llama or alpaca?”

The truth versus profit… the latter wins every time.

That’s a really wonderful light-hearted take on a serious problem plaguing our socirties.

When I first saw these I thought of Peruvian hats! Thanks for taking that idea and writing a wonderful all-dialogue story.

Loved the last line. There’s an old dialogue in Hindi- Hum nahin sudharenge! Lossely translated, it means- We will never improve/get on the right path!
